English As A Second Language Program--Upper Elementary School
The American School of Doha ESL Philosophy
The Elementary School English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the American School of Doha helps students acquire and develop language through the four essential skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. ESL specialists develop and deliver a planned program of language support using a variety of instructional strategies. Classroom and ESL teachers work together in the content areas to best meet the needs of all students. The ESL program at the American School of Doha recognizes the importance of each student's home language and culture. Strong home language proficiency contributes to the development of a second or additional language. The ESL specialists create a comfortable learning environment allowing ESL students to build the confidence necessary to achieve success in their social and academic experiences.
ESL Program Description
The ESL program at the American School of Doha is available to non-native English speakers with limited experience in an English-medium school. Students enter the program through referral at the time of admission or by the classroom teacher. The program supports students in the process of developing both social and academic language skills utilizing the curriculum of the respective grade level. The ESL specialist works closely with the classroom teacher and together they assess and monitor students’ English language acquisition. Students attend ESL during their Foreign Language block. Based on individual needs, students may receive additional pull-out or in-class support from the ESL specialist. Students may be considered for exit from the ESL program when they consistently demonstrate grade level language proficiency. The ESL specialists and classroom teachers carefully review recent assessments, test scores and evaluate classroom performance to make a recommendation for exit from the ESL program.
