Essential Agreements for Music

Teachers will provide students with the experience of the joy of making music with others when singing and playing instruments together.

Teachers will provide students with the understanding of the relationship between audible music and written notation, and that reading music is a skill that can be developed with practice.

Teachers will provide students with the understanding that music is an expression of human culture by exposing them to a variety of musical genres and styles from around the world.

Teachers will provide students the musical understanding to develop criteria for evaluating the quality of music using correct terminology in their analysis.

Teachers will provide students the opportunity to perform for others, and the understanding of performance etiquette required to behave appropriately when others are performing.

Teachers will provide students with the understanding that they are capable of improvising and creating music, and that this skill can be learned and developed with practice.

Elementary School Music Standards

Standard 1 Students will sing and play a varied repertoire of music.
