Ghana Service Trip
Over Spring Break 2010, 35 students, accompanied by ASD teachers Mr. Chi-Yan Shang, Ms. Umut Gursel, Ms. Ann Durham and Mrs. Leon Chung traveled to Ghana, West Africa on ASD’s third annual International Service Trip. While in Ghana, students started building a brick and mortar building to replace an existing mud structure that once housed a pre-kindergarten block in the village of Kopeyia, Ghana. While in Kopeyia, students also were given the opportunity to learn West African drumming and dance. Following their three day stay in the village, students visited the UNESCO sites of the Elmina Slave Forts, once a transit point for the West African Slave trade, and also visited the cultural center of Kumasi and took some time out to visit the river city of Akosombo where the Volta Dam is located.
