Welcome to the ASD Elementary Library!
Library Enduring Understandings
- Libraries serve all members of the community.
- Reading is a lifelong activity.
- Effective research strategies can be applied to many different situations.
The library is staffed by two full-time teacher-librarians, Lauren Elliott and Karen Genest. There are also three assistants; Geri King, Maryam Ashtiani Kian and Soumya Salahudeen, as well as one audio-visual assistant; Ruben Orias, onstaff.
Please go to our library catalog to discover all of the print and electronic resources available to our school community.
The elementary library is open from 7:30 to 3:30 on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and from 7:30 to 1:00 on Tuesday. The collection has over 15,000 volumes and includes fiction, nonfiction, picture books, reference materials, early reader books, professional resources for teachers, audio books, DVDs, magazines and a parenting section. Available technology includes a Smartboard, a computer classroom, and several computers for library patrons to use throughout the day.
The library operates on a fixed schedule for the lower elementary. Students in Pre-K and kindergarten have a weekly scheduled story and checkout time. Students in grades 1 and 2 visit the library weekly for stories, library skills lessons, research, and checkout.
The library has a flexible schedule for upper elementary students. Students in grades 3 to 5 have a weekly checkout and SSR (sustained silent reading) period. Additional lessons are scheduled with the librarian to integrate information literacy skills with the core curriculum.
All students are welcome to check out or return books anytime during the day, including before school, during morning and lunch recess, and with a parent after school. First through fifth graders may check out four books, kindergartners three, and pre-kindergartners one. Parents may apply for a library number, allowing them to check out five items at a time.
The library is open after school for parents to read or study with their children. Children in the library after school must be accompanied by an adult.
